In partnership with Bookmarc Alliance, author Pilar De La Cruz Samoulian will exhibit the Spanish edition of But I Want to be a Nurse in the upcoming 2023 Guadalajara International Book Fair. The event will take place at the Expo Guadalajara Convention Center this November 25 to December 3, 2023.
Growing up, people have instilled in Pilar that she can only daydream about achieving a good life and that it’s not bound to happen to her — it’s as if the universe has already decided on her future. So at a tender age, Pilar knew the harsh truth for someone like her who comes from the Mexican minority group.
Despite the negativity, Pilar did not let anything stand in the way of reaching her dreams and ambitions. Pilar faces different and never-ending challenges as she makes her way to achieving her dream of becoming a nurse. She pushes through with determination and persistence; eventually, her hard work and fearlessness led her to carve her own name in the industry and fulfill her younger self’s daydream of a good life.
Pilar De La Cruz Samoulian has been a registered nurse for over 50 years. She has served as director of the Central California Center for Excellence in Nursing, at Fresno State. In 2015, she was appointed by Governor Jerry Brown to serve as a member of the California Board of Registered Nursing. Before joining the panel at a Zócalo, the California Wellness Foundation event titled “How Are Immigrants Changing the Way Health Care Is Practiced?” at the RedZone at Gensler in Los Angeles, she spoke in the green room about the town of Reedley, movie nurses, and her Fresno State Bulldogs.
