6,328 Crashes. 30 Deaths. $195 Million in Losses. State Data Exposes a York County Road Safety Crisis

Stewart Law Offices Calls on Drivers Across Fort Mill, Clover, York, Tega Cay, and Rock Hill to Understand the Dangers on Their Roads

Rock Hill, South Carolina Feb 22, 2026 (Issuewire.com)  - York County recorded 6,328 motor vehicle collisions in 2023, ranking 8th among all 46 South Carolina counties for total crashes, according to the South Carolina Traffic Collision Fact Book published by the SC Department of Public Safety. The crashes claimed 30 lives, seriously injured 115 people, and inflicted more than $195 million in economic losses on communities throughout the county — from Rock Hill and Fort Mill to Clover, York, and Tega Cay. www.stewartlawoffices.net, a Rock Hill-based personal injury firm founded by Brent Stewart in 1995, is releasing this data to shine a light on the road safety challenges facing every corner of York County.

By the Numbers: York County’s 2023 Crash Toll

The county’s 2023 crash data tells a sobering story. Of the 6,328 total collisions, 29 were fatal — resulting in 30 deaths — and 97 were serious injury crashes that left 115 residents with life-altering harm. An additional 1,168 crashes caused other injuries, and over 5,000 incidents resulted in property damage only. The county’s total economic loss reached $195,232,200, up more than $5 million from 2022, as the population and vehicle miles traveled continued to grow.

Crashes Across Every York County Community

No part of York County was spared. Rock Hill saw the highest concentration of crashes among city police jurisdictions, with Rock Hill Police Department investigating 2,307 collisions — including 6 fatal crashes, 35 serious injury collisions that left 40 people seriously hurt, and 439 additional injury crashes. But the dangers extend well beyond Rock Hill’s city limits.

Fort Mill Police investigated 389 crashes, including 2 fatal collisions and 6 serious injury collisions that left 8 people seriously injured. York Police handled 270 crashes with 1 fatal collision and 5 serious injury collisions leaving 6 people seriously injured. Clover Police responded to 83 crashes including 1 serious injury collision, and Tega Cay Police recorded 70 crashes with 2 serious injury collisions. Critically, the SC Highway Patrol investigated 3,181 collisions countywide — more than any single agency — including 20 fatal crashes and 48 serious injury collisions that left 58 people seriously injured, underscoring that many of the most severe crashes are happening on unincorporated county roads and state highways that run through every part of York County.

The Most Dangerous Roads in York County

US-21 was the county’s deadliest road, with 716 total collisions including 5 fatalities and 15 serious injury crashes. I-77, which runs through the heart of the county connecting Rock Hill and Fort Mill to Charlotte, recorded 605 crashes. SC-161 logged 452 total incidents with 3 fatal crashes, and SC-160 — a key corridor through Fort Mill and Tega Cay — saw 355 crashes. The intersection of I-77 at SC-460 was the single most crash-prone intersection in the county with 140 collisions.

Why Are These Crashes Happening?

The data is clear on the root causes. Distraction and inattention was the top contributing factor, cited in 2,029 incidents across the county. Driving too fast for conditions was listed in 1,595 crashes, and failure to yield right of way contributed to 1,369 collisions. Running off the road accounted for 549 incidents. These are all preventable behaviors — and they are costing York County residents their lives, their health, and their financial security.

Vulnerable road users paid a particularly high price. Motorcyclists suffered 95 injury incidents across the county, pedestrians were involved in 35 crashes — including 5 fatalities — and bicyclists were involved in 20 collisions.

“Whether you live in Rock Hill, Fort Mill, Clover, or anywhere else in York County, these roads are your roads. Every one of these crashes involved real people — neighbors, parents, kids — whose lives were upended in seconds. We have been working directly with injured people in this community since 1995, and we know the devastating aftermath these families face. Our goal in sharing this data is simple: we want fewer people to get hurt.”
