Brett, who passed away unexpectedly in July 2024, was not only a talented musician but also a carpenter, mechanic, writer, tattoo artist, and more. His love for music, particularly rock and roll, has left a lasting impact on Kristen, guiding her journey into the world of lyricism and music production.
Brett McElwaney, known for his skill with the guitar and his unique songwriting, composed numerous songs over the years. Despite Kristen's persistent pleas to record and preserve his work, fate did not allow them to collaborate before his passing. One song, in particular, titled "Deeze Blues," also known as "White Picket Fence," was a piece that haunted Kristen after his death. “I tried so hard to remember the lyrics, but they slipped away, and it tore me up inside,” Kristen recalls.
It wasn’t until Brett’s longtime partner, Haylei Harley, gifted Kristen a recording of Brett performing "Deeze Blues" that a dream was realized. With limited production skills, Kristen lovingly restored the recording and distributed it under her father’s name, ensuring that Brett's voice could forever be heard. “I wanted me and my sisters to always have the memory of him singing to us,” she says. She also created a heartfelt cover of "Deeze Blues," collaborating with her father posthumously by using his original guitar track for her version.

Kristen Poulter, professionally known as Pen Name Moon, continues to honor the memory of her late father, Brett Clinton McElwaney, by sharing his music and ensuring his legacy lives on. Brett, a talented rock and roll musician and songwriter, passed away unexpectedly in July 2024, just before Kristen’s finalist appearance at the International Singer-Songwriters Association (ISSA) awards for Female Songwriter of the Year.
Though Brett had planned to watch the event from home—unable to afford a ticket after gifting Kristen a keyboard in celebration of her success—his passing came a month before the ceremony. In a touching tribute, Kristen brought his urn, decorated with a guitar, to the red carpet and seated it beside her during the ceremony.
Recently, award-winning composer, songwriter, and producer Johnathan Horner, known as the "Beat Mekanik," who has been recognized by ASCAP and Warner Brothers Publishing, stepped in to professionally restore Brett’s recording. With his expert touch, the song has been fully cleaned and is now ready for future redistribution, allowing the world to hear Brett’s music in its purest form.
In a show of generosity and commitment to the music community, Kristen has announced that all revenue generated from the release of Brett’s recording will be donated to MusiCares, an organization dedicated to helping musicians in times of need.
“Music runs through my veins because it ran through his,” Kristen reflects. “I’m grateful to Johnathan for helping me give my father’s music the care it deserves, and I’m excited that the proceeds will go to an organization like MusiCares, which supports musicians like him.”
