Hirschau, Bavaria Jun 6, 2022 (Issuewire.com) - The annual sandboarding competition "SANDSPIRIT" will take place from July 7th - July 10th 2022 in the German city of Hirschau in Bavaria. The location of the event is the Monte Kaolino vacation center, famous for its artificial dune with more than 50 years of history, where the first skiers tested their skis to glide over this mountain of sand after the winter season, and the only sand-ski sports facility in the world equipped with a lift.
In 2020 the event had to be canceled due to the pandemic and in 2021 only local riders had the opportunity to meet under strict health measures and protocols due to covid-19. The event has been officially catalogued as the "Open European Sandboard Championship" and it is expected to attract athletes from all over the world, including both experienced sandboarders and snowboarders who are curious about this new emerging discipline.
Sandboarding is a sport similar to snowboarding, but which consists of sliding down sand rather than snow. A special board, called a sandboard, is used for best performance on the sand with the aid of wax. The sport, also known as "sand surfing", has been growing in popularity since the early 90s, especially in South America and parts of Africa where it can be practiced on large desert dunes. There are however plentiful of known sandboarding locations all over the globe, which also include smaller coastal dunes and artificial sand hills such as Monte Kaolino.
