Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) is a subspecialty of obstetrics and gynecology that focuses on managing health concerns of the mother and/or fetus prior to, during, and shortly after pregnancy. Maternal-fetal medicine specialists are physicians who subspecialize within the field of obstetrics. For pregnant women with chronic health problems or other complications during their pregnancy, MFM specialists work to keep them as healthy as possible while their bodies carry a pregnancy. They also care for women who face unexpected problems that develop during pregnancy such as early labor, bleeding, or high blood pressure. MFM specialists also diagnose and treat fetal conditions, such as birth defects and intrauterine growth restriction.
