Cape Town, Western Cape May 12, 2023 (Issuewire.com) - iMbokodo, a recent female empowered entrant to the oil and gas industry, has appointed Sonja de Bruyn as Chairperson of its Board of Directors. Sonja succeeds Sean Lunn who served as Chairperson from 2019.
Sonja has had a 25-year career working in corporate finance and transactions across the globe, most recently in Private Equity.
In 2008, Sonja founded Identity Partners a Johannesburg-based black women-owned and managed investment firm, primarily focused on investing in sectors which have traditionally not been welcoming to women, such as infrastructure and energy. The Company now employs over 20 black professionals.
Sonja sits on the Board of Directors at Ethos, the leading alternative investment manager in Africa. She chairs the Ethos Mid-Market Fund I and is also responsible for Diversity, Transformation and Gender Parity within the business.
Throughout her career, Sonja has been passionate about promoting women and diversity in business and finance. She is currently a member of President Ramaphosa’s Advisory Council on Investment, is on JP Morgan’s EMEA Advisory Council, and was previously a member of the Presidential Working Group on B-BBEE in President Mbeki’s administration. For five years, Sonja was Executive Director of WDB Investment Holdings from 2002-2007.
In 2010, Sonja was named one of the Class of Young Global Leaders by the World Economic Forum. A few years later she was named Woman of the Year in 2014 by the Black Management Forum, and by the Association of Black Securities and Investment Professionals (ABSIP Woman of the Year 2014).
Sonja began her career at Deutsche Bank, primarily based in South Africa but also working in the London, and Tokyo offices, following an Undergraduate degree from the London School of Economics and an MA from McGill University studying Economics, Policy and Business.
Having undertaken various Board roles throughout her career she is currently Chairman of RMB Holdings, Total Energies Southern Africa, iMbokodo E&P, 10X (Index Asset Manager) and Lead Independent Director at Remgro Group. Previously she has been on the Boards of Rand Merchant Insurance and Discovery Group, FirstRand, Anglo American Platinum, Mr Price Group, Nestle South Africa and the National Empowerment Fund (a DFI).
