Colac, Victoria Jun 9, 2018 (Issuewire.com) - Red meat is a staple of Australia’s diet and a staple for Australia’s GDP and export market. Forward-thinking lamb processing and export company Australian Lamb Company Group (ALCG), based in Victoria, has found a pro-active and powerful way of offsetting a substantial portion of the carbon emissions inherent in the red meat industry.
Adapting to an increasingly green-centric marketplace and cultural landscape, and adding a fresh tier to their knowledge-base, ALCG has recently had one of Australia’s largest privately owned rooftop solar installations to their key sites in Colac and Sunshine. Within the context of the red meat industry that has until now been targeted by green groups and cited for its carbon-intensity, the significant step of offsetting those carbon emissions so comprehensively in one fell swoop, has garnered widespread praise.
“ALCG have been impressively progressive from start to finish with this project,” said CEO of the solar company who facilitated the largescale installation, which included over 5,200 solar panels. “They wanted to set the standard for maximum environmental impact. Not just the standard within their industry, but in general, and I believe they have absolutely done that.”
Vertically integrated from paddock to plate the company has two processing sites, being Colac and Sunshine both of which are situated in Victoria. ALCG has a workforce of over 700 across both sites.
ALCG exports to over 60 countries worldwide. So they are now proud to be able to assert that they are also exporting their sustainable processing methodology via their solar power station.
“Australia is the world’s largest exporter of sheepmeat with a value of $5.23 billion in 2016-17. We believe we should also lead the industry in becoming one of the world’s largest proponents of sustainable, environmentally beneficial practices,” ALC’s Dale Smith said.
“Being able to eat that meat and know that the supplier, ALCG, is powered by its own renewable energy source, is a powerful footnote to everyone’s consumption habits.”
ALCG’s combined solar power stations amount to just over 1.4MW capacity of hourly solar power output.
Their solar power stations offset the equivalent of taking 447 cars off the road (every year), or the same carbon offset by 10,723 mature trees, every year. A powerful statement for the Australian lamb industry, and an example that both their industry peers and the wider Australian manufacturing and processing industries hopefully soon learn to follow.
