AWS Research Grant Awarded to Dr. Nabil Adam and Dr. Robert Wieder

Amazon Web Services has awarded Dr. Nabil Adam and Dr. Robert Wieder a grant for their research project, "Racial Disparities in Cancer Therapy-Induced Adverse Events."

New York City, New York Feb 16, 2023 (Issuewire.com)  - Regarding this award to Dr. Nabil Adam and Dr. Wieder, The AWS Health Equity Initiative (HEI) said, "We are honored to be joined by so many talented innovators leveraging the cloud to reduce inequities in care and enhance health outcomes by increasing access to health services, reducing disparities by addressing social determinants of health, and leveraging data to promote equitable and inclusive systems of care."

The Study Rationale and Objectives

Breast cancer (BC) is a significant cause of cancer death in women. Treatment modalities in BC result in adverse events from complex interactions among patients, disease, and treatment variables. These are difficult to predict.

Despite lower incidence rates, African American patients have decreased breast cancer survival rates than White patients. Treatment quantity and quality frequently differ between the two races.

Accurate and significant data is unavailable for most of these variables and requires large databases for analysis.

Our initial goal is to use SEER-Medicare databases to identify the pattern of treatment and adverse event differences between White and African American patients. The approach, based on rule-based mining, will pave the way for additional follow-up approaches.

Through its three-year commitment, Amazon Web Services is investing $40 million to help improve the health equity of people around the world. AWS is giving companies and institutions access to its technical expertise and resources to address some of the most challenging health disparities through its promotional credit program.

The program's goal is to help develop culturally-responsive applications that can help improve access to health services and reduce the health disparities in the communities.

Using cloud-based technology, they will help address the structural and social disparities identified in people's health worldwide due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This can help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations.

Many cloud-based interventions will be created to help address the needs of the underserved population. These include conversational AI applications that can help improve the accessibility to health services and target specific health disparities.

In addition to race, ethnicity, and gender, they will include sexual orientation, disability, and neurodiversity.

Organizations using the cloud to improve health outcomes and reduce the inequities in care are invited to participate.

Increase access to health services.

The availability of health services is a critical factor that can help improve the health outcomes of individuals. Digital health can help increase the accessibility of care by allowing people to consult health services in almost any country.

Reduce disparities by addressing social determinants of health

One of the most critical factors considered when addressing the causes of health disparities is the non-medical factors that affect the development and maintenance of health.

Through the grant program, AWS looks for projects focused on improving the social determinants of health (SDoH) by leveraging technology to help people access various services and economic opportunities.

Leverage data to promote equitable and inclusive systems of care

One of the most common factors contributing to health disparities is the lack of data. A global assessment revealed that only 51 percent of the countries have data representative of the diverse population.

The grant program focuses on supporting projects to improve data representation in health systems.
