BASE Project kicks-off: a journey towards innovation and sustainability

Manchester, United Kingdom Oct 28, 2024 (Issuewire.com)  - The BASE Project kick-off meeting was held on 30-31 July in Berlin, Germany, hosted by the Project Coordinator Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. ‘BASE’ stands for the ‘Battery Passport for Resilient Supply Chain and Implementation of Circular Economy’. The main goal of the BASE project is to develop, validate, and implement a working Digital Battery Passport (DBP) service, as mandated by the EU Regulation. This will be achieved by exploiting data collected through a variety of constantly evolving tools and methods, ensuring a transparent, secure, and cost-efficient platform operation while also catalyzing the growth of circular businesses.

The BASE kick-off meeting was attended by its consortium members including the project coordinator (Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft), fourteen beneficiaries (BeePlanet Factory; Adscensus, MB; Parakeet BV;  INND Batteries B.V.; Ford Otosan; Artech International; Corvus Energy; Mercedes-Benz Türk; Seraph Consulting Ltd.; ROK Metals SARL; ASPİLSAN Enerji; NAVTEK Deniz Teknolojisi A.Ş.; European Lithium Institute eLi; Exitcom Recycling) and four associated partners (The Graduate Institute, Geneva; SQM SA; Technovative Solutions Limited; University of Surrey) from twelve different countries. The consortium came together to work on 9 work packages and to make the project a success by supporting the European DPP initiative, emphasising transparency and sustainability, and setting out to redefine how batteries are perceived, produced, and utilised.

The use cases involved in the BASE project include Automotive (E-bus EV platform production pilot for MARCEDES-BENZ and frugal EV platform production pilot FORD Motors); Marine (electric tugboat production pilot) and Stationary (2nd-life electric energy storage production pilot).

BASE is a 3-year long project under the call ”HORIZON-CL5-2023-D2-02-03: Creating a digital passport to track battery materials, optimize battery performance and life, validate recycling, and promote a new business model based on data sharing (Batt4EU Partnership).” The project has received funding from the Horizon Europe Framework Programme (HORIZON) Research and Innovation Actions under grant agreement No 101157200.
