Dubai, United Arab Emirates Oct 29, 2022 (Issuewire.com) - META Film Fest, the new international film festival covering the Middle East, Asia, and Africa’s film industry, kicked off on the 27th of October at the Vox Cinemas at Nakheel Mall in Palm Jumeirah where more than 70 films from 25 countries are being featured.
With a tagline of ‘Tolerance and Unity through Film’, the three-day film fest that continues until October 29, 2022, started with the screening of three short films from the UAE, including Deadline, Children of All, and IDI, as well as The Dawn of the Great Steppe, Terminus, The Tortoise, and the Snail, The Apple Day, followed by a number of short films from Iran, Jordan, Sweden, Korea, Egypt. However, the main attraction of the day was the gala premiere of Emily by the director Frances O'Connor, who attended the premiere as well. It has already been nominated for Toronto International Film Festival and Sitges – Catalonian International Film Festival.
META Film Fest has attracted several international and regional celebrities including Dora Rodriguez, a Canadian actress in the R.L. Stine adaptation of Zombie Town, Cris Mejia, Nayla Al Khwaja, Emirati film director, Maria Bello, and Casey Shannon, Actors of Children of All, Shalila Samavati, actor of Tunnel, Pegah Ahangarani and Neslihan Yeldan of Juror, among many others.

The red carpet of the event was home to beautifully dressed celebrities showcasing their elegance and sometimes their traditional national attires. One actress, in particular, the Canadian Dora Rodriguez, seemed to steal the show, as she arrived at the opening gala on October 27th wearing an elegantly stunning golden gown by the UAE fashion brand called Hi Maintenance. When approached on the red carpet, she gracefully said her outfit and the entire look of the evening were inspired by her favorite Italian actress, Monica Bellucci.
The form-fitting long gown hugged the young actress' beautiful feminine curves and had a carefully crafted slit in the front to showcase her lengthy legs. She paired the gown with a nude Max Mara clutch, Yves Saint Laurent sandals, gold Cartier bracelets, and small Swaroski studs.
"I've been working so hard lately... Last month I was on set, in Canada, filming Zombie Town with actors Dan Aykroyd and Chevy Chase, so to have been invited, and to have been able to make it to Dubai for this film festival, was a spur-of-the-moment decision, but one well worth it, considering I'll be able to watch the anticipated premiere of Emily by director Frances O'Connor. I am a huge fan of her work, and I definitely look forward to meeting her later," said Rodriguez.
The film Dora Rodriguez spoke of is Frances O’Connor’s hauntingly beautiful and dazzlingly ethereal Emily, which critics have dubbed as a highly speculative portrait of the famed author’s [Emily Brontë] turbulent path to writing the literary classic “Wuthering Heights”. And yet, it taps into a rare, visually poetic vein that wonderfully captures the bracing truth of her experiences, even though much of what’s depicted didn’t happen.
There is a playful wonder to the film’s portrayal of the trials, tribulations, and aching romances that honestly underpin the classic writings we have all come to know. With this stunning debut, O’Connor suggests that only the emotive truth of the prose is what matters, not the mere facts of what transpired. While the real Brontë may not have been on screen, this vibrant tale acts as an indelible shadow truth that will endure long after the facts have turned to dust.
