San Francisco, California Feb 6, 2022 (Issuewire.com) - In 2009, Black Laurel Films’ founder and executive director Adrienne M. Anderson started the conversation of Black women represented in the increasingly popular speculative fiction film genre, specifically horror films.
With the recent popularity of such studios as Blumhouse and Jordan Peele’s Monkey Paw, American audiences developed a new zeal for horror films with creative storylines.
BLF is a consistent advocate in presenting outstanding storytelling through the film that normalizes the presence of African American women in film. To date, 11.5% of horror films prominently feature a Black woman, whereas, the standard narrative film only features 6% Black female leads.
In celebration of Black History Month, Black Laurel Films presents a list of outstanding horror films featuring Black actresses that spans more than 85 years of movie-making. As communities minimize their social activities due to COVID-19, viewers are encouraged to find a new favorite film to view at home via a multitude of streaming services, or to just revisit an old film or share their own favorites!
