Benevolent Sexism in Workspace

Over time, the scenario of any workplace has changed. Before, female candidates were neglected more because people used to think that they will be not good enough for the position compared to a male candidate. This has changed a lot and now people of both gender get the same amount of opportunity in the workplace. But still, now, there are a lot of things that can be changed in the workplace for women. There are many scenarios, where a female employee gets compliments on how they look. A compliment like this can boost a female employee’s confidence. But the problem is, people generally give compliments to a woman when she is looking nice and not doing the same when she is doing a good job in her office. After some time, it can affect a person’s morals and her will to work more. And this thing is called benevolent sexism. Here are some examples of benevolent sexism that are mostly seen in offices-

• Performance Review Based on Personality and Not Work:

To have a successful career, it is very much important to get constructive feedback. Without feedback, you won’t be able to understand which part you need to work on more and improvise your work. And in many cases, female employees do not get this kind of feedback, which will help them to improve in their careers. It is one of the negative sides of benevolent sexism. The good part of it is that female employees receive feedback that they are good team players and the other members like to work with them. But only this kind of feedback is not good enough to have a great career. Along with that, this can be a huge problem when you work under a male boss. Most of the time, they think that female employees are not capable enough to handle any tough situations. It can be a reason for a very big problem in someone’s career.

• Shifting of Workload After Maternity Leave:

Every working woman faces a difficult time when they have a baby. It is really difficult to get into the work life after the maternity leave. In this period, a woman goes through a lot of tough scenarios that are even impossible to imagine. But a good part of it is that as a female employee when you return from maternity leave then your workload decreases a lot. You don’t have to travel much and deal with difficult kinds of things. But apart from this, there are a lot of things that are disappointing for an employee. It is seen that, before taking the maternity leave, you have left a significant mark in the company with your work and you have shown your dedication to the organization. But after the leave, the authorities are not thinking you are capable enough to do the same things. There are chances that you can experience this kind of worse case.

• Plan an Event for the Company:

As an employee, if you are given the responsibility of arranging an event, it will be a great opportunity to showcase your talent. From this, you can get a lot of positive feedback and get more recognition from you. From this, you can become the main person to arrange for the event for the next few years. It is the positive side of this opportunity. But the negative side of it can be that people will think you are the doer of this job. Everyone will assume that you are the only responsible person who has to do this job. Then people will stop giving you the appreciation of the job you are doing.

These are some examples of benevolent sexism that you can experience in your workplace. Thus, you have to be very much conscious of what impact it can make on your work life.
