Running late for work is an inevitable part of adulting that cannot be avoided at all times. But most of the time it is okay as people understand. But every once in a while your boss might ask you for an explanation and the real reason just is not good enough. Well, here are some of the very best 10 excuses that you can use the next time you are stuck in such a situation.
1. “The Bus Broke Down.”
This would work like magic if you use public transport to come to the office. If you regularly take the bus, train, or even subway, then you have a perfect excuse, ready in hand. You can easily let your boss know that you would have been at the office on time, but it was your ride that made you late.
2. “I Lost My Wallet.”
Losing your wallet can mean a great deal to a working adult. It contains money, license, ID, and what not. While we wish that to never happen to us, you can use this as a great excuse for being late. Tell your boss that you had to spend extra time searching for it, which is not your fault.
3. “I Overslept.”
Okay, this may make you look a little bit unorganized, but when in a hurry, sleeping in for a little bit more time is not so bad. Surely your boss will understand if you pair up a good excuse like sleeping late last night or being extra tired today for whatever reason. But make sure to blame it on the alarm clock to make it seem like it is not your fault!
4. “My Babysitter was Late.”
If you have kids and someone watches over them, blaming your tardiness on them would work as a perfectly believable excuse. Do not feel sorry about bringing your kids in the lie, after all, what are kids for if they cannot save you from the wrath of your boss? Tell your boss that you could not leave the house until the babysitter came over.
5. “I’m Stuck in Traffic.”
A classic and still works just fine! There is a good chance that your boss also faced the traffic on their way to the office, if not the same day but they will understand that you have no control over the issue. Tell your boss that you had to deal with traffic on the way, especially if it was a road to the office that you just could not avoid!
6. “My Pet is Sick.”
Similarly to children, use your pets as leverage. You can tell your supervisor that you are late to work because your pet was feeling sick, or your dog was throwing up so you had to run to the vet before coming late to work!
7. “My Home was Burglarized.”
Okay, this is a bit dramatic but it can very well gain you some much-needed sympathy! Tell your boss that your home was robbed early in the morning and you had to wait for the police to come and collect the evidence. But make sure you are saving this excuse for the time you need it as homes do not get robbed twice.
8. “I had a Death in the Family.”
This is again another excuse that will gain you an ample amount of sympathy. Use death in your family as an excuse for coming late to work. Let your boss know that an extended family member had died and you had to be there before coming to the office.
9. “I had a Family Emergency.”
This works best when you do not feel like explaining much. A family emergency can mean a lot of things, especially if you don’t want to get into details, just tell your boss that you had a family emergency you needed to take care of.
10. “My Water Pipes Burst.”
You can use your home as an excuse to get out of trouble if you came late to the office. Tell your supervisor that your water pipes had burst and you had to take care of it first. Or you can even tell things like your power went out or there was a small fire in your kitchen.
Concluding everything, get in touch with your boss as soon as you learn that you will be late. The quicker they will know the excuse, the faster they will believe you!
