San Francisco, California May 12, 2023 (Issuewire.com)  - California resident Richard H. Davis, a consumer watchdog, intends to file a class action lawsuit against Burger King Corporation ("Burger King") alleging that its Impossible Whopper burger contains a laxative ingredient, methylcellulose. The lawsuit seeks class action status on behalf of Burger King customers who were allegedly misled into believing that the Impossible Whopper had no unwanted side effects.

Methylcellulose is a tasteless powder that is widely used as a bulk-forming laxative, and is listed on the ingredient labels of plant-based meat products made by both Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods. While a recent post by the Mayo Clinic said that there is no evidence that using fiber supplements like methylcellulose is harmful. However, some individuals who are less tolerant to methylcellulose can experience diarrhea, stomach cramps, and other unappetizing symptoms.

The plaintiff in the pending class action lawsuit alleges that Burger King Corporation “made false statements” that concealed the presence of methylcellulose in its Impossible Whopper burger. Methylcellulose is the binding agent that holds the Impossible Whopper together, and is the replacement for collagen, the fibrous protein found in regular hamburgers. Methylcellulose is an FDA-approved food additive and laxative.
