Alexandria, Virginia May 26, 2021 (Issuewire.com) - Cicada Fashions and Advice from Jolene Sugarbaker the “Trailer Park Queen”
While some dread the coming of the 17-year cicada infestation, otherwise known as Brood X, Jolene Sugarbaker is celebrating their arrival with a return of her line of cicada fashions and some practical advice.
Jolene Sugarbaker, The Trailer Park Queen, comedian, and YouTube/internet celebrity chef has launched a revival of her line of cicada-themed gifts and apparel in honor of their arrival. They’re featured in her online store at TrailerParkShop.com.
"I first got interested in cicadas when Brood X hit the East Coast in 2004" explains Sugarbaker. "The bugs were flying around here crazy. There were billions of them. Stores ran out of nets and bug spray and people were scared.”
But Sugarbaker took a more sympathetic approach than most to the winged invaders. “Imagine being stuck underground for over 17 years, she says. “You’ve got one chance to sing your song, mate, and then die. I think that’s sad. Even if they are kinda disgusting."
In response to the 2004 East Coast infestation, Sugarbaker designed her first line of clothing celebrating the cicada phenomenon. Her Cicada Couture was featured on Washington DC area television stations and in newspapers.
Now that they’re making reemergence for the 2021 invasion, Sugarbaker has designed a new line of Cicada Brood X line of clothing and gifts to honor this generation of cicadas and to give her friends on the East Coast a good laugh in the middle of their misery. “From t-shirts to coffee mugs, cicada candles to keychains, your Cicada Couture will make you the talk of the supermarket, bingo parlor, or your local dime store, whether you want to be or not,” laughs Sugarbaker.
As something of a folk expert on the bugs, Sugarbaker has been inundated with questions from the cicada-weary and offers answers to these popular questions:
-
Can cicadas hurt you? (No, but their legs kinda tickle when one lands on you!)
-
What do they taste like? (Nutty and Crunchy. Radio stations will try this stunt.)
-
Will they eat my trees? (No, they didn't hurt them 17 years ago, they won't hurt them now.)
-
Will, they hurt my car? (No, but be ready with glass spray and paper towels.)
-
My dog ate one, will he be okay? (Yes, just fine! Don’t let them have a buffet though.)
-
My child ate one, will he be okay? (Yes, but please watch your child closer.)
When not advising and clothing the cicada-challenged, Sugarbaker, a stand-up comedian, cooking instructor, and video producer, promotes the trailer park lifestyle on her website JolenesTrailerPark.com. Sugarbaker’s award-winning YouTube channel youtube.com/JoleneSugarbaker features more than 300 Trailer Park Cooking Show episodes, which have received recognition from The Taste Awards for their humor and great, down-home recipes.
