London, United Kingdom Aug 13, 2021 (Issuewire.com) - Consent Granted for the first new thatched roof home to be built in Metropolitan London for over 300 years
Anthony Browne and Alex Kiss and the design team have been granted permission from Brent Council and Historic England to rebuild Wembley Lodge after it was severely damaged by a fire in 2013. It was the entrance to Wembley Park designed by Humphry Repton.
Wembley Lodge stood at the entrance to Wembley Park. In 1792, the most famous landscape architect of his day, Humphry Repton, was hired to transform the farm into parkland. From the 1920s the Park was developed into Wembley as we know it today. The Lodge is all that survived from the 1800s.
Browne and Kiss proposed to reconstruct the “cottage orné” with a thatched roof as it was first built. This approach was welcomed by both residents and the authorities. The thatch will have special fireproofing because thatched houses were banned in London after the Great Fire of 1666.
Anthony Browne was the Architect for the largest new Country House to be built in Britain for 100 years and numerous other maverick projects. Alex Kiss was a modernist before joining Anthony Browne and converting to traditionalism. Their approach is to harmonise place-making with history.
