CSGEF Announces Research Program Named After Renowned American Political Scientist and Geo-Economist, Joseph Nye Jr.

CSGEF, a Dubai based think tank, Announces Research Program Named After Renowned American Political Scientist and Geo-Economist, Joseph Nye Jr.

Washington, D.C, District of Columbia Sep 11, 2021 (Issuewire.com)  - Nye has served on the Board of Directors of the Council on Foreign Relations, the Guiding Coalition of the Project on National Security Reform, and the Center for Strategic and International Studies Board.

The Center for the Study of Global Economic Future (CSGEF) has announced a research program named after renowned American political scientist and a pioneer in geo-economics, Joseph Nye Jr., known for enormous contributions to the study of global and international security. He has already been a contributor to the Future of Economic Powers & Geo-Economics Program (EP&G) at the CSGEF.

Joseph Nye Jr. was Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs from September 1994 – December 1995 under President Bill Clinton and a member of the Harvard faculty since 1964. Along with Robert Keohane, Nye is the co-founder of the international relations theory of neoliberalism, developed in their 1977 book, Power and Interdependence. Together with Keohane, he developed the concepts of asymmetrical and complex interdependence.

From 1977 to 1979, Nye was Deputy to the Undersecretary of State for Security Assistance, Science, and Technology and chaired the National Security Council Group on Nonproliferation of nuclear weapons. In recognition of his service, he was awarded the State Department’s Distinguished Honor Award in 1979. In 1993 and 1994, he was Chairman of the National Intelligence Council, which coordinates intelligence estimates for the President, and was awarded the Intelligence Community’s Distinguished Service Medal.

Nye has contributed immensely toward advancing the concepts and practice of geo-economics globally and in Asia specifically. He served as a Trustee of Radcliffe College and

Wells College. He was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star in recognition of his “contribution to the development of studies on Japan-US security and to the promotion of the mutual understanding between Japan and the United States.

He has served on the Board of Directors of the Council on Foreign Relations, the Guiding Coalition of the Project on National Security Reform, the Advisory Board of Carolina for Kibera, and the Board of the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Joseph Nye Jr. has also been awarded the Woodrow Wilson Prize by Princeton University and the Charles E. Merriman Prize by the American Political Science Association.

Making the announcement, Mr. Mahmood Sharif, the Managing Director of the Center for the Study of Global Economic Future, said it’s an honor that someone of Joseph Nye’s stature has agreed to put his name behind a CSGEF research program. “This is a stamp of approval for the study of geo-economics in the MENA region that the CSGEF intends to do, and also an inspiration for us to set our benchmark high in terms of producing cutting-edge research,” Sharif said.

In his recent paper, America’s New Great-Power Strategy, published on the CSGEF website in August 2021, Nye argued the various dimensions of the new power strategy. One of the rationales Nye provides for such a strategy rest on the notion that China is the world’s second-largest economy, and its GDP (at market exchange rates) may surpass that of the US by the 2030s.

“But even if it does, China’s per capita income remains less than a quarter that of the US, and the country faces several economic, demographic, and political problems. Its economic growth rate is slowing, the size of its labor force peaked in 2011, and it has few political allies. That alliance is at the heart of a strategy to manage China’s rise,” Nye says.

Established in Dubai, UAE, in 2021, the Center for the Study of Global Economic Future (CSGEF) is a multidisciplinary policy research organization scrutinizing the socio-economic and systemic forces that bear upon the future of the financial system worldwide. The aim is to offer an extraordinary methodical perspective on the socio-economic and systemic forces that sustain the global economy’s future.
