New York City, New York Jan 29, 2020 (Issuewire.com) - Theatre festivals are huge in New York City. From the big guns in the industry like the Midtown International Theatre Festival to smaller scale festivals like the Strawberry One Act Festival, artists from all walks of life and varying levels of experience in the industry, all have the opportunity to bring their vision to life.
The New York Theatre Festival is an absolute phenomenon in the city. They organize multiple festivals throughout the year, namely ‘Winterfest’, ‘Summerfest’ and ‘Shakespeare’. ‘Summerfest’, which up until 2016 was known infamously as the ‘Thespis Theatre Festival’, is their most popular.
The 2016 Thespis Theatre Festival concluded with a bang, with a large attendance of audiences from all over the United States in which one of the most talked-about productions was The Clockwork Boy, written by Fordham University alum Matthew Tiemstra and directed by Emily Garrison. It was produced at the Hudson Guild Theatre located in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan. Members of the cast include Alaida Rose Delaney, Sanjana Iyer, Jose Gamo, and Patrick Semas.
Another noteworthy production was Something Like a Fairytale, written and composed by Lawrence Dandridge, starring himself, which has gone on to be selected into the National Black Theatre Festival.
Submissions are currently open for the New York Theatre ‘Summerfest’. Not only does this continue to draw attention to the melting pot of talent that New York really is, it gives younger playwrights their big break on an off-broadway stage.
