Holi derived from Holika Dahan, also known as Holika Bonfire, is a Hindu ritual that is a part of the festival of Holi. It commemorates the victory of good over evil and the triumph of devotion over malevolence. The history of Holika Dahan dates back to ancient Indian mythology, specifically to the legend of Prahlad and Holika.
According to Puranas, there was a demon king named Hiranyakashipu who was granted a boon that made him invincible. He grew arrogant and demanded that everyone worship only him. However, his own son, Prahlad, was a devotee of Lord Vishnu, much to his father’s dismay.
Hiranyakashipu’s sister, Holika, had a cloak that made her immune to fire. The king conspired with her to kill Prahlad by ticking him into sitting on a pyre with Holika. However, due to Prahlad’s unwavering devotion to Lord Vishnu, he emerged unscathed from the fire, while, Holika despite her cloak, perished.
This even symbolizes the victory of good (Prahlad’s devotion) over evil (Hiranyakashipu’s tyranny) and is celebrated by burning effigies of Holika on the eve of Holi, known as Holika Dhan. It is believed that the ashes from his bonfire have purifying and protective properties. Holika Dahan also marks the beginning of the joyful festival of colours, Holi, deliberated the next day with the throwing of coloured powders and water.
The Holi festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm and fervor throughout India.
