Eventually, after deciding not to endure the harassment any longer, he left and launched into a study to understand the dynamics of abuse in how religion is practiced. While it is not focused on theological inquiry, Robert Williston’s I Will Disentangle Myself … and Leave searches for a perspective from which one can evaluate the health of one’s relationship with religion.
Robert was raised in Miramichi, New Brunswick, and was affiliated with the Two By Two group until he left the group in his fifties. He is a graduate of the University of New Brunswick, and his post-graduate schools have included Université Laval, Boston University, and College of Southern Nevada where he specialized in educational supervision, educational media, and religious studies. He made a career of teaching French and English languages, US history, and political science in several provinces of Canada and in Nevada. He interrupted his teaching career to serve a session in the Nevada legislature as secretary to the Senate Finance Committee. He is the author of several novels, as well as articles on child sexual abuse and emotional and spiritual abuse. He is now retired and lives in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Robert’s well-written book sets itself apart from other testimonies of leaving abusive groups through an in-depth account of how he reached the place of peace that he had come to. It was not in the condemnation of religions, nor the exposure of ineptness of the Two By Two system. It was in gaining the self-worth and control to determine for one’s self what you will believe without the abuse of coercion.
