Born in South Africa to a Scottish mother and Rhodesian father, SMILING DÆMONS’ artistic path began early, picking up the guitar at age 10 and immersing themselves in digital audio workstations (DAWs) by 15. A move to Luxembourg at 16 solidified their passion, leading to intensive work in Ableton Live. After completing high school, they pursued a degree in Physics in Scotland, a study of structure and chaos that would later inform their musical approach.
Choosing to dedicate themselves fully to music, SMILING DÆMONS embarked on a period of intense artistic incubation. This deeply productive phase was defined by crafting hundreds of tracks, honing a unique sonic palette by sourcing samples from unconventional places, and developing a raw, unfiltered style. Their sound draws comparisons to the abrasive, genre-defying intensity of Death Grips, operating with a similar confrontational and public-facing energy.
This period of focus was followed by significant personal challenges, including experiences with psychosis that forced a reevaluation of life and art. These events ultimately fueled a powerful creative resurgence. Now based in Luxembourg again, and recently engaged, SMILING DÆMONS has channeled these experiences into their most coherent and compelling work to date.
Burning Stars is the culmination of this journey. Unlike previous works, the album presents a clear, political narrative, reflecting an artist who has not only found their voice but is unafraid to use it. It is a testament to resilience, a product of a frugal and independent spirit, and a bold statement from an artist poised to share their vision with the world.
