Gangster: A True Story of Christianity and Islam in the Crime-Torn world of an American

Thomas Merton

Published in Amazon paperback on 25th of August 2021, priced $14.99

‘This autobiographical book by African American author Thomas Merton recounts his days as a member of a street gang in Chicago (specifically, Southside Chicago and the United States’ Bureau of Prisons).  This compelling story is a “must-read” for anyone who ever thought of giving up on achieving his or her dreams.’—Vanessa Winters, author of Detour

Having fled the killers who murdered his mentor in the slums of Milwaukee to his Christian grandmother in Iowa at age 14, Thomas concludes that Jesus is a fairy tale and seeking wealth is the ultimate goal. Thomas’s philosophy of survival of the fittest and his insatiable hunger for money, power, and influence drove him to prison at age 16.

He spends the next 27 years in and out of prisons. After his release from Lucasville Penitentiary, he travels to Chicago, determined to never go back. Yet, he had no intention of ever becoming a law-abiding citizen…only covering his tracks. After his girlfriend introduces him to Paris Poe - hitman for the Hobos - he found himself caught up in a cesspool of drugs, robberies, murders, and organized crime. Until he found himself in so deep…there was no way out.

After the Feds indict the Hobos for Racketeering, Thomas broke the code and found himself incarcerated with Poe, who is determined to silence him forever. Like a frog in slowly boiling water, Thomas found himself in an ever-tightening vice-grip of death. Facing the probability of being murdered behind the walls, Thomas is forced to confront his shortcomings as a man and the irrefutable evidence for Christ. Will the life of Thomas be saved?

‘Recently sent to prison, Thomas Merton-former Hobo, Chicago’s most vicious gang-reveals his story of betrayal and greed, in his intimate autobiography, Gangster.’—Angela Sheffield, author of The Third Man
