Based in Texas, he practices at Texas Oncology Surgical Specialists-Austin North & Texas Oncology Surgical Specialists-South Austin. He also operates at the following surgery locations: St. David’s Medical Center and St. David’s South Austin Medical Center, where he is the Medical Director of the Surgical Oncology Program.

With a broad educational background, Dr. McKenzie graduated with his medical degree from the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. He then went on to perform his internship in surgery and his residency in general surgery at the University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital, where he served as chief resident. 

Furthering his training, he completed research fellowships in both urology & general and vascular surgery at the University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital. He then completed an externship in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, followed by a fellowship in surgical oncology at the City of Hope National Medical Center.

Throughout his extensive line of work, Dr. McKenzie has worked as the Medical Director of Oncology Services at Baptist Health Lexington, (March 2018 – July 2019), Associate at Lexington Surgical Specialists (April 2013 – July 2019), Vice Chief of Surgery at St. David’s South Austin Medical Center (2017 – 2018), surgeon at Texas Oncology (November 2015 – March 2018), Partner at Surgical Associates of Austin (August 2013 – October 2015), Director of the Hepatobiliary Tumor Program at the University of Kentucky HealthCare, Markey Cancer Center (January 2011 – 2013), and as an Assistant Professor within the Department of Surgery at the University of Kentucky HealthCare (July 2010 – July 2013).

Board-certified in general surgery, the doctor is a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.

A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), Dr. McKenzie is also an active member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the International Hepato-Pancreato Biliary Association, the Society of Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, and the Society of Surgical Oncology.

Surgical oncology is the branch of surgery applied to oncology. It focuses on the surgical management of tumors, especially cancerous tumors. A surgical oncologist removes the tumor and nearby tissue during surgery. He or she also performs certain types of biopsies to help diagnose cancer.

Among Dr. McKenzie’s various accolades include the American Society of Clinical Oncology Cancer Foundation Merit Award – 2010; Gordon H. Lyde Award for Resident Mentorship – 2012; Chief Residents’ Award for Superior Mentorship in Surgical Technique – 2013; and Ward O. Griffin Award for Medical Student Education – 2013.
