Gary Upton was born in Sutton-in-Ashfield, England, in the ’80s before moving with his mother to America in his teenage years. There he was raised on a council estate. Growing up, he developed a love for the bass and went further by learning how to play the double bass. This passion for music led him to work in a music shop. It was further emphasized when he chose to study music at Western Connecticut State University.
After his studies, he opened his workshop in 1999 that refurbished and sold basses. Upton Bass String Instrument Company has gone on to become a world-renowned brand that is beloved by Grammy-award-winning musicians and symphonies across the country.
The company continues to thrive under Gary’s direction and has gained a growing list of elite clients and strict adherence to the quality standards that reflect his lifelong love of the instrument.
Upton Bass is also the only manufacturer of double basses in the United States with a past retail sop in Boston from a workshop in Mystic, Cincinnati, since 2004. This year, a new showroom opened in New York City. His direction to the manufacturing facility has employed and managed dozens of working artisans and development staff over the years.
Apart from being a musician, Gary is an entrepreneur and inventor. This is evident in his invention of a double bass that can be disassembled to fit into a suitcase—an example of his commitment to craftsmanship, sustainability, and high-quality standards.
Gary Upton has also launched and developed a lifestyle/fitness brand called UP Fitness. This is an upscale gym that features sophisticated workout options to the community of Mystic, Cincinnati. Their gym is equipped with programs that reflect their motto ‘Exhilarating, Not Intimidating’ as they seek to achieve wellness.
His work for the community has been noted, giving him the title of chairman of East Line Inland Wetlands, an agency whose goal is to protect the local resources from potentially hazardous development.
His approach to the welfare of communities has earned him the opportunity to partner with colleges and universities where he gives lectures on innovation and entrepreneurial vision. One of which is the Rhode Island School of Design. He hopes to mentor the younger generation in navigating the local political landscape.
Gary hopes to connect with the youth through the songs he writes, as he sees that it is the best way to connect the disparate pieces of life to move forward. He hopes to build a legacy that shows creativity can develop new habits that can benefit the communities.
