Plymouth, Devon Sep 20, 2021 (Issuewire.com) - Guardian Cleaning & Maintenance is running an extensive cleaning, maintenance and restoration program on Drake’s Island. Drake’s Island has a rich and varied history. Over the years it’s been used for a church; as Sir Francis Drake’s island, a prison, an adventure centre, and a defense on multiple different occasions. Its current owner, Morgan Phillips, plans to open the island to the public with a museum and heritage centre. But it has fallen into disrepair and is being restored and cleaned by Guardian Cleaning & Maintenance before it opens.
In keeping with the island’s importance as a national monument and its importance as a marine conservation area, it will be a ‘green’ development, a plastic-free environment, which makes use of renewable waves and tidal energy. Similar to a wind turbine, the surging tides and crashing waves will turn blades in the water and power the island’s development. It uses no fossil fuels and will continue to be usable as long as the ocean has waves and tides.
The new owner’s first ecological study took place in September of 2019, with sightings of Sandwich Terns and an egret. The studies happen every month, even to this day.
The island, now open to the public, has wedding venues, an aquarium, a wildlife reserve, guided tours, a VIP area, ghost tours, kids’ activities, and events for many different holidays. It was recently the site of an exciting boat race and a man’s kilometer-long swim.
