To compile the list, TIME solicited nominations from TIME’s editors and correspondents around the world, and through an online application process, paying special attention to growing fields—such as the electric vehicle industry, green energy, and the metaverse. TIME then evaluated each contender on several key factors, including originality, efficacy, ambition, and impact.
Of the new list, TIME’s editors write: “The result is a list of 200 ground-breaking inventions (and 50 special mention inventions)—including life-mapping artificial intelligence, diamonds made from excess carbon in the air, and the most powerful telescope ever—that are changing how we live, work, play, and think about what’s possible.”
Notable among inventions that were included in the design section was Hoverpen 2.0 designed by Novium. The company was founded by David Liang, a physicist in Taiwan. He along with his associates designed an artwork sculpted from aircraft-grade Aluminium. The team used Neodymium to magical effects to create a pen that pays tribute to earth as it does to science.
Designers that included scientists like David were completely involved in formulating a combination of metal alloys that makes simple yet magical tilt and possibly, freestanding as our earth is. As with other inclusions in the list, Hoverpen had admirers in mind who were intrigued and admired by science and magic to an equal extent.
