Memphis, Tennessee Oct 18, 2018 (Issuewire.com) - Each year parents gear up for a long drive or plane ride over the river and through the woods to Thanksgiving at the grandparent’s house. The reward is the arrival. The dreaded part is the trip. Long hours trying to keep children confined to a car, turns parents into frantic problem solvers.
Parents end up scouring stores for any activity that will keep the kids occupied as they travel. They pack video games, movies, snacks, anything to stop the dreaded whining or fighting.
The parent of three children and award-winning children’s book author Marie White has three tried-and-true ways to make the Thanksgiving travel season happier for all.
Pack a travel bag. This should be a bag of items that your children have never played with before. Don’t let the kids know what’s in the bag and make a big deal about the surprise coming next hour. Anticipation helps keep grumpiness away.
Change activities every hour. Pull out one new item from the bag for each child, stop at a park for 15 minutes or get a snack. It will be tempting to bend the 60-minute rule, but stick to it and your children will help count down the minutes.
Turn off the electronics. After two hours of electronics, kids start to feel restless, cranky and trapped. Vary the travel experience by watching a 45 to 60-minute program, followed by 60-minutes electronic free, to use the surprise you pulled from the travel bag.
Marie decided that since she couldn’t find the perfect travel activity, she would create it.
She made kids into authors.
White’s new release, Sophia Wants to Write a Book is the culmination of 15 years of helping kids love to read and write.
Sophia, the dog wants to write a book, but can’t because she can’t hold the pen. Kids help her write the book, from writing their name on the cover to adding a picture and bio on an “About the Author” page. It’s just like a real book and when they arrive at their destination, they have something special to read to the relatives.
Other travel bag goodies could be as simple as party favours, mini-notebooks, Matchbox cars or My Little Ponies for younger children, to books, fancy pens, sketch pads and activity books for older kids.
Using these three tips will improve your travel experience and ensure each member of your family has the best time possible this Thanksgiving.
