Columbia, South Carolina Jul 8, 2024 (Issuewire.com) - In association with the Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission, the soon-to-be Irmo Youth Wrestling Club KingPins (www.IrmoYouthWrestling.com/), will host their inaugural Youth Wrestling Camp at the Seven Oaks Gymnasium Facility on Monday, July 22nd, and will run daily from 1:00 pm to 5 pm, throughout the week and ending on Friday, July 26th.
According to Tommy Sevilla, the Irmo Middle School Head Wrestling Coach, who recently enjoyed a record-setting season in his first year at the school...
"The goal is to introduce the sport of wrestling to the youth in the greater Irmo community so that they will participate at the middle school and high school levels, as well as in local wrestling clubs and tournaments. This Camp and our club, Lord willing, will benefit all of the area middle school and high school wrestling programs, moving forward."
Sevilla, who has coached his son to two South Carolina State Youth Wrestling Titles and his daughter to numerous local and regional titles and placements in the California and South Carolina State Tournament, sees great potential in the Irmo area and believes that the Irmo schools can be wrestling powerhouses again, as they were in the past...
"Irmo has great community support and exceptional athletes. The South Carolina kids, as a whole, are very impressive, and the more opportunities for them the better. Girls and kids wrestling is huge in other states like California and there are some good, dedicated people in this State who are committed to the sport and have already blazed the trails; I'm honored to be among them. Ultimately, I can speak for all of us coaches and those involved in South Carolina Wrestling by saying that we all want to see self-esteem and confidence improve, kids' health improve, and these kids get college scholarships for wrestling while putting respect on the South Carolina Wrestling name"
The Irmo Youth Wrestling Camp is hosted by the Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission and will be a structured, intensive Folkstyle and Freestyle training camp with reputable coaches from local high schools and middle schools, as well as State and National Champion clinicians and current and former college wrestlers.
