He has been in practice since 1976 and has specialized in contact lenses with a special interest in keratoconus and corneal refractive treatment CRT. Throughout his optometric career, Dr. Mermelstein has developed the largest long term care eye health service in New Jersey caring for the geriatric community, the homebound patient, an HIV ward and a pediatric ward of sick children. Dr. Mermelstein’s optometric career began in 1971 when he earned his bachelor’s degree in Biology from Yeshiva University, where he also was on the Dean’s List. He then graduated from the Southern College of Optometry in 1976 where he also was on the Dean’s List.
Resident Eye Care Associates, LLC is a group optometric practice employing 10 associate optometrists, providing eye health care service to 300 nursing homes and assisted living centers along with homebound patients throughout New Jersey. Dr. Mermelstein along with his partner Dr. Robert Sholomon provide eye health and vision care at their primary office in Fair Lawn including a full-service ophthalmic laboratory and dispensary.
Dr. Mermelstein has been awarded The Dr. E.C.Nurock Award, New Jersey Society of Optometric Physicians’ Highest Symbol of Recognition, in 2013. Additionally, in 2004 and 2005, he was named America’s Top Optometrist, and Strathmore’s Who’s Who in 2005 and 2006. In 2003 and 2005 he was the recipient of the TLC Laser Eye Center- Commitment to Exceptional Patient Care & Dedication to Clinical Excellence in Refractive Surgery. He has also received the Recognition of Excellence of Eye Care in Cosmetic Surgery from the Omni Eye Services. In 2017, he was awarded the Dedication to the Advancement of Knowledge and Patient Care among Health Care Professionals from the National Glaucoma Society. Of which he is a member.
He holds expertise in Diagnosis & Management of External Eye Disease and the Diagnosis & Management of Glaucoma from The Institute for Continuing Education. He holds Certification of Post Graduate Education in Ocular Therapy from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry. As well as Certificate of Competency Based Education in the Treatment and Management of Ocular Disease from the International Association of Board of Examiners in Optometry; Certificate of Competency in the Use and Prescription of Pharmaceuticals from State of New Jersey, Office of the Attorney General, NJ State of Optometrist; Certificate in Contact Lens form the American Optometric Association; Certificate of Expertise in Corneal Refractive Therapy from Paragon Vision Sciences; and Certification in Low Vision Services from the University of Pennsylvania Department of Ophthalmology.
When he is not practicing optometry, Dr. Mermelstein enjoys spending quality time with Anne, his wife of 48 years and their 3 daughters and son-n-laws and 8 grandchildren. One of his favorite pastimes is fishing. He has been featured on the Outdoor Channel while sports fishing on Lake Ontario for King Salmon and in the Florida Sportsman catching Trophy Snook and Mahi Mahi.
