Reston, Virginia Apr 29, 2021 (Issuewire.com) - It is with great sadness that the Conservatory Ballet of Reston announces that Founder and former Director Julia Cziller Redick passed away on April 18, 2021.
Mrs. Redick founded The Conservatory Ballet in Reston in 1972 and remained as Director of the school for close to 50 years. The creation of the Conservatory Ballet was the result of a multigenerational approach to ballet education. Julia’s mother, Alicia Kish, was a Prima Ballerina Assoluta with the Hungarian State Opera Ballet. They escaped the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 and came to the United States as refugees, and found a home teaching at the Hannah More Academy for Girls. Julia followed in her mother’s footsteps as a ballet dancer and teacher and became the youngest ballet mistress at the academy at the age of 19. She then went on to create her own legacy in Columbia, Maryland, and Reston, Virginia with The Conservatory Ballet. After moving The Conservatory Ballet to Reston, the school grew quickly and was soon recognized as one of the premier ballet academies in the country.
She is survived by her three children, Darren Redick, Jared Redick, and Alexia Redick Bartlett as well as grandchildren Alana, Oliver, and Hugh.
Mrs. Redick began The Conservatory Ballet with her love of ballet and passion for giving every student an opportunity to dance and be taught. That desire to teach has impacted thousands of children to become not only great dancers but also great people with a deep appreciation and love of the art form. Mrs. Redick taught for 55 years and created a legacy of excellence that is renowned throughout the ballet world and the local community.
The school and its works will be continued by the newly-appointed Artistic Director Joan Boada, former Principal Dancer with San Francisco Ballet, who will work alongside Madame Irina Vahkromeeve, formerly of The Bolshoi and Mariinsky Ballets.
“Julia Cziller Redick will be remembered as a brilliant teacher, who was loved by all of her students, and who devoted her life to bringing the joy of dance to each of her many students,” said Joan Boada, Artistic Director of Conservatory Ballet Foundation. “It was her vision of Conservatory Ballet as a premiere ballet school that set the foundation for what Conservatory Ballet is today. She embodied the spirit of the school and will be deeply missed.”
