When did you last post a status update?
Before you reach for your phone, maybe it’s time to reconsider?
Gillian Harvey’s laugh-out-loud novel about social media has made readers across the UK
question their reliance on online platforms and the “cult of instagrammable perfection.” Her novel
‘Everything is Fine’ is now hoping to raise these important questions in the US and Canada after its launch on 26 January 2021.
The British writer, who overcame depression in her late 30s, feels strongly that social media can exacerbate mental health problems. “Social media can be a force for good,” she says. “But can also create a comparison culture – people feel they need to compete, to have the same things, look the same way.”
“I wanted to challenge this, and help readers to look behind the scenes of a perfect world, through the character of Jessica Bradley.”
Described as both hilarious and poignant, Gillian Harvey’s debut novel explores the modern obsession with social-media perfection and compares this with achieving happiness in the real world.
“EVERYTHING IS FINE had me laughing from the outset! Such an enjoyable read, and with a poignant underlying message about social media and happiness.” - Washington Post bestselling author Kelly Harms

Synopsis
Jessica has it all… at least that’s what her thousands of followers believe. In reality, she’d started to blog about her weight loss as a way of motivating herself. But after a celebrity retweets one of her posts, she’s labelled a ‘fitness influencer.’ She feels forced to keep up appearances - even though she’d rather reach for a Dime bar than a dumbbell.
Things go from bad to worse when photogenic boyfriend Dave decides to break up with her. How can she keep up the appearance of a perfect life, when in reality everything is falling apart?
Everything is Fine focuses on the hilarious disconnect between Jessica’s real and online lives, but has a serious message too: how can any of us hope to find ‘real’ happiness in a fake world?
Short-listed for Guardian’s ‘Not the Booker Prize’, ‘Everything is Fine’ is available online at www.amazon.com in paperback, e-book and audiobook or available to order from your local bookstore. It will be available at bookstores, and listed with Edelweiss by publishers Orion.
