London, England Feb 27, 2022 (Issuewire.com) - With over ten years of experience in the Designing industry, Liam Toller has seen his share of success, with clients including The Game, French Montana, Meek Mill, Dan Bilzerian, and Beyoncé among others. As the UK-based graphic designer’s reputation continues to grow within the industry, he now spends most of his time working on larger projects that require extensive collaboration with other creatives such as top producers, designers, and marketing strategists. Recently in an interview, Liam Toller talks about some of his most recent work and what it takes to be successful in such a competitive business environment.
Liam Toller says that I am inspired by music. I often listen to hip hop or dance music while designing. They help me get into a different zone and create innovative designs that have a purpose and a meaning behind them rather than designing just for creating something new. I am also inspired by nature, working with bold colors, textures, brush strokes, and pattern making to bring life to my work.
The process is more important to me than finishing a design on time, there is always room for improvement even if it’s not perfect! There’s an old saying perfection is achieved when there is nothing left to take away and nothing left to add. This has always been my approach.
Liam Toller explains I was always drawing ever since I was a kid. I'd spend most of my time daydreaming about being a cartoonist for Disney or Marvel when I grew up! My mother would often find me in front of one of my many storybooks re-creating each frame with pencil and paper! I've got to be honest...it really hurt looking back at some of those drawings! I still have them pinned on my wall as motivation but they were truly shocking to see again after all these years...lol - Liam Toller
If I have an idea that’s as complete as possible (ie: it has a beginning, middle, and end), I like to just go away and work on it by myself. You could call me introverted but I prefer to think of myself as being dedicated in my pursuit of excellence. That's not to say that if someone else comes up with a good idea or suggestion for something then I won't take it on board. Creativity is all about collaborating - open minds are very important in my line of work.
But sometimes I need to get away from people so I can be truly creative. The internet has become almost too easy to access information these days; having control over what you consume makes you more creative. If you read everything under the sun, your brain will eventually become aware of how much it knows and will cease trying to find new things out because there's no point; subconsciously, at least. This can lead to laziness. Cutting yourself off from online content for a few hours every day can help overcome that.
It can be very difficult to find your feet in any industry. Having said that, I think it is especially hard for people to break into design because most opportunities aren’t advertised and many small companies are reluctant to spend money on services they don’t need at that moment.
As far as advice goes; it is important not to get disheartened or distracted by what you cannot do. It is equally important that you take every opportunity that you can so you can learn from others and continue building your portfolio while making valuable contacts. Whenever I see something designed well, I always try to research who did it so I can keep their work in my mind for later use.
There are two main things I would recommend: hard work and talent. There is no doubt that you need to be talented to get noticed in today's cut-throat business world. But if your work is just average then you won't make it very far in a creative field.
Talent will get you through that first hurdle but what really gets you noticed is hard work! Show dedication to every project, go above and beyond in everything you do. If there's an opportunity to showcase your skills then take it up - show initiative and drive to better yourself at every turn, throw yourself into your job with as much enthusiasm as possible because people do notice people who are passionate about their careers!
Once you've met one of your goals is there another more important goal? The industry keeps evolving and growing so I think it's important to keep challenging yourself. Hopefully, we get to a place where everyone accepts good design, and making beautiful work is no longer frowned upon.
We’re not quite there yet! The biggest challenge for me right now is keeping my emotions balanced. When I am going through a tough time or I get really frustrated with an idea or project it seems like every bad thing happens all at once but that's only because I'm focusing on that one issue. Designing isn't easy and everything takes time so I have to try my best not to burn out.
