New York City, New York Aug 12, 2021 (Issuewire.com) - A board-certified diagnostic radiologist and neuroradiologist, Dr. Shapiro is the Medical Director and reading radiologist for Neuro Imaging Winter Park. In addition, he has extensive experience in musculoskeletal MRI, including orthopedic training at Duke University.
With a passion for teaching, Dr. Shapiro has been chosen by the University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine to teach their MRI fellows, who are already board-certified radiologists, each spending three months of their fellowship program under his tutelage. He is also a Co-Editor for MRI of the Head and Neck Volume Radiologic Clinics of North America and is the former Chief of Neuro MRI & ENT Radiology at Yale University.
Regarding his educational background, Dr. Shapiro obtained his medical degree from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine in 1974. He did a rotating internship at the University of South Florida. He then did his radiology residency at the University of South Florida, UCLA Medical Center and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York. He subsequently did an angio/ interventional CT/ Ultrasound fellowship at Allegheny University Hospital in Philadelphia followed by a fellowship in neuroradiology at the Yale School of Medicine.
Nationally recognized in his field, Dr. Shapiro the doctor is board-certified in both diagnostic radiology and neuroradiology by the American Board of Radiology (ABR). The ABR is a not-for-profit physician-led organization that oversees the certification and ongoing professional development of specialists in diagnostic radiology, interventional radiology, radiation oncology, and medical physics.
Dr. Shapiro has been asked to speak at prestigious national and international lectures on MRI, such as the American Society of Neuroradiology and RSNA meetings, Dr. Shapiro was chosen for three years in a row as one of only eight doctors worldwide to speak at the 3rd annual international symposium on 3T whole-body MRI. He has also written chapters on spine imaging and surface coil development for MRI Clinics of North America’s edition on 3 Tesla MRI. as well as Spine imaging at 3 Tesla for the NeuroImaging Clinics’ edition on 3 Tesla Imaging Dr. Shapiro works with Siemens to conduct research that has resulted in helping to develop new protocols for brain and spine MRI that radiologists now use to better identify abnormalities.
Neuroradiology is a subspecialty of radiology focusing on the diagnosis and characterization of abnormalities of the central and peripheral nervous system, spine, and head and neck and orbits using MRI and CT to identify pathology.
Voted among America’s Top Radiologists from 2002 through 2014, Dr. Shapiro has also been the recipient of the Compassionate Doctor Recognition (2014), Patients’ Choice Award (2015), and On-Time Doctor Award (2014, 2015). He has been chosen by his peers among Orlando’s Top Radiologists from 2014-2021.
Outside of work, he enjoys working out and spending time with his wife, Valerie, and their three dogs. He regularly reads The American Journal of Neuroradiology and attributes his success to hard work, love for his work, and passion for his field.
