Woodland was born in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. and grew up in Queensland. His father, Paul Woodland, was an economist, and his mother, Fay, worked as a teacher. Woodland attended Bond University but did not complete his bachelor of Law.

Woodland joined the Australian Army in 2003 serving in the Royal Australian Artillery Corps. During a training exercise, Woodland injured himself and later transferred to the Australian Psychology Corps where he helped soldiers returning from war. In 2010 Woodland retired from the Australian Army to help his mother in her childcare business. Woodland was responsible for the administration of the service, which deeply frustrated1 him; this resulted in the development of the software platform Xplor.
Xplor
In January 2016, Woodland and his mother sold their 3 childcare businesses and Woodland then went on to found Xplor2, a software platform that removes administration from parents, educators, and centres so they can focus on teaching and learning.
Xplor received funding3 from Venture Capital Firm Airtree Ventures4 and grew to become the second largest childcare platform in Australia. Late in 2019 Xplor was acquired by Private Equity Group Advent International, which also owned the software platform QikKids. Woodland became CEO of the company and now leads the largest childcare software platform in Australia.
