Vancouver, British Columbia Mar 5, 2025 (Issuewire.com) - The Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) has imposed sanctions on Ricardo Salinas Pliego for deliberately obstructing the resolution of a tax dispute through abusive and frivolous legal tactics.
Mexican tax authorities have repeatedly determined that Ricardo Salinas and his various companies owe the Mexican government approximately USD $5 billion. However, Salinas has refused to pay and has engaged in numerous appeals and legal maneuvers to evade payment—all while flaunting his luxurious lifestyle on social media, showcasing his yachts and private jets.
The SCJN ruled that Grupo Elektra and Ricardo Salinas personally engaged in systematic obstruction of the judicial process by filing 38 frivolous appeals, 15 frivolous impediments, 19 frivolous claims, and four frivolous conflicts of jurisdiction—all designed solely to delay proceedings and avoid compliance with judicial rulings. Of these, three impediments and eight appeals have been resolved, while four conflicts of jurisdiction were dismissed, leaving 27 cases still pending resolution. In response, the SCJN has sanctioned Salinas for these frivolous legal maneuvers.
This obstruction is part of Ricardo Salinas and Grupo Elektra’s broader strategy to delay rulings on more than USD $5 billion owed to the Tax Administration Service (SAT). By filing multiple frivolous claims and impediments against four Supreme Court ministers, Grupo Elektra successfully stalled the resolution of its tax liability, leaving the case in limbo and potentially delaying a final decision until after judicial elections.
Additionally, Supreme Court Justice Loretta Ortiz Ahlf recently accused Ricardo Salinas of bribery, alleging that he attempted to influence a favorable ruling to avoid paying his tax obligations to the Mexican government.
The Supreme Court’s decision to impose sanctions underscores the company’s repeated attempts to evade legal and financial responsibility. Astor Asset Management 3 Ltd supports the SCJN’s efforts to uphold judicial integrity and prevent Ricardo Salinas from abusing the legal system to escape accountability.
