Mowr Technologies Contributes to Southside Community Kitchen in Wake of Lansing Storm

Lansing, Michigan Sep 14, 2023 (Issuewire.com)  - After storms struck the lower Lansing, Michigan area on the night of August 24, 2023, many residents lost power. Mowr Technologies, a Lansing company that offers on-demand lawn care service, generously contributed to the Southside Community Kitchen, a local non-profit that provides nourishing meals to those in need.

The company was launched by founders Doug Salazar and Gray Taylor in 2016 in the heart of Lansing, Michigan.

“We have always built our business with the community in mind, and helping our community is what we want to do, and giving back is always a priority,” said Salazar.

The area experienced severe storms with winds reaching speeds of 110 to 125 mph. These storms caused extensive damage to roads and power lines, resulting in a significant power disruption.

Marcia Beer, the executive director of the Southside Community Kitchen, stated that power outages contributed to the food loss. The organization depends on its part-time staff of four and local church groups, community service groups, and volunteers to help prepare meals in the Lansing area.

“The Southside Community Kitchen lost power to our refrigerator and freezer units on Thursday, August 28, around 8:30 p.m.  I checked the units on Friday morning and found the temperature in the refrigerator was already over 60 degrees - because the food was not cooled to 41 degrees or lower, I had to dispose of all the food in the refrigerator. The loss of food at SCK was directly related to the loss of power. Items like salad dressing, mayonnaise, cheese, yogurt, eggs, etc., were lost and needed to be replaced. Fortunately, we were able to save all of our freezer items by moving them to off-site freezers that had power,” said Beer.

The monetary donation from Mowr Technologies will be used to replace essential items and enable SCK to sustain its mission of providing food to every person who seeks help.

“We are committed to serving meals on a reliable schedule, treating each person with dignity and respect, and bringing our community together to serve and support people who struggle with food insecurity.  Our door is open and there is a place for all around our tables,” said Beer.

As Lansing natives, the tech duo sought out non-profits like the Southside Community Kitchen which aids residents during difficult times.

“It is through acts like these that true community spirit and resilience are showcased, inspiring us to have confidence in the power of human kindness,” said Taylor.
