myStudentFinance, a service based in Tilburg, has now helped more than 1,000 international students apply for Dutch student finance. The company works with DUO, the Dutch government office that gives out this money. myStudentFinance says 90 out of every 100 applications it prepares are approved.
Why DUO's Rules Are Hard to Follow
DUO offers a few types of help to students. This includes the Basic Grant, the Supplementary Grant (which depends on how much a student's parents earn), the Student Travel Product for buses and trains, and a Loan that must be paid back later. These can add up to real money each month. But the rules for who can get this money are not always easy to understand. It depends on things like your nationality, your age, where you live, and how many hours you work.
"A lot of students think they can't qualify because of a rule that says you must work 32 hours a month," said a spokesperson for myStudentFinance. "But that's not always true. There are other ways to qualify, like earning a certain amount of money instead. Many students never learn this on their own, and that's the gap we try to close."
How myStudentFinance Helps
Instead of filling out DUO's forms alone, students can let myStudentFinance do the work for them. The team checks a student's situation, tells them what they can apply for, and fills out the full application. This includes gathering income documents, translating them if needed, and making sure nothing is missing before the form is sent. The company says it usually sends the application to DUO within 24 hours.
No Win, No Fee
Students do not pay anything to start. If the application is turned down, they still pay nothing. If it is approved, myStudentFinance takes one fee, 59.99% including VAT, from the student's first payment only. There are no monthly charges. The company says this way, it only earns money when the student does too.
What Happens If an Application Is Rejected
Not every application is approved. When myStudentFinance still believes a student should qualify, the company helps them file a complaint with DUO. If that does not work, myStudentFinance connects the student with a law firm that offers free legal help. The goal, the company says, is to make sure students don't give up too early.
Helping Students Who Don't Know They Qualify
Many of the students helped by myStudentFinance are not Dutch. The company says students from EU countries, or students with certain Dutch residence permits, can often get the same DUO money as Dutch citizens. Many of them do not know this. Some students give up before even trying, simply because they assume the money is only for people born in the Netherlands.
myStudentFinance also points to two groups that are often confused about the rules: students who are self-employed, and students doing internships. DUO's rules are written mainly with regular jobs in mind, so these students often aren't sure if they qualify at all. A self-employed student, for example, may need to show they are registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce and earn a certain minimum amount each month. An intern may need a paid, supervised placement rather than an unpaid or very short one. myStudentFinance says it checks for these cases early, before an application is sent, so students don't get an unfair rejection.
"We talk to students all the time who were told, wrongly, that they don't qualify for anything," the spokesperson added. "Part of our job is just making sure students get the right answer before they give up."
