NAACP Allentown Reaches 200,000 African Youth with Juneteenth Basketball Photos

The Allentown branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) celebrated Juneteenth by sharing photos with young people in Africa via a 7-day social media campaign to connect with youth on the African continent.

The NAACP Allentown posted pictures of the tournament reaching over 200,000 people in nine African countries, including Uganda, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Sudan, Tanzania and South Africa. The posts received more than 37,000 positive reactions from the African viewers, who expressed their solidarity and gratitude for the event and the international outreach initiative. 

The basketball tournament was one of the many activities organized in the Lehigh Valley to commemorate Juneteenth, the oldest nationally/internationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to ensure that all enslaved people be freed, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. 

The NAACP Allentown branch is dedicated to advancing the civil rights and social justice of African Americans and other marginalized groups in the community. The branch organizes various events and programs throughout the year to promote education, health, economic empowerment and civic engagement.
