Dr. Zacharias practices through Obstetrix Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialists of Houston, part of Pediatrix Medical Group, and provides care across multiple hospital systems, including Houston Methodist Health System, St. Joseph Medical Center, and The Woman’s Hospital of Texas. He currently serves as Director of Maternal-Fetal Medicine at St. Joseph Medical Center (HSA/Steward Health) and holds academic appointments as Clinical Professor of Obstetrics and Maternal-Fetal Medicine at the University of Houston Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine and at Texas A&M University Vashisht School of Medicine. In these roles, he leads medical student education, OB/GYN resident training, and perinatal education programs, fostering excellence in both patient care and physician development.

A native of Greece, Dr. Zacharias graduated with excellence from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens School of Medicine, reciting the Hippocratic Oath as a top graduate in his class. Throughout his training, he received multiple Hellenic scholarships for undergraduate and postgraduate studies. After moving to Houston in 1998, he completed his OB/GYN residency at Baylor College of Medicine, where he was elected chief resident by faculty and peers in 2001 and received the CREOG Academic Achievement Award for four consecutive years, ranking among the top 3% of U.S. residents.

Dr. Zacharias subsequently completed a Maternal-Fetal Medicine fellowship in Perinatology at The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) at Galveston, TX, and pursued a Masters in Medical Science (MMSc) in Medical Research Design at UTMB, completing all coursework with distinction. During his fellowship, he earned the UTMB Hospital Academic Fellowship Award for his exceptional scholarly and clinical contributions. Following the fellowship, he returned to Baylor College of Medicine as an Assistant Professor, serving as Medical Director of the Harris Health System Prenatal Ultrasound Screening Program and founding Medical Director of the Ben Taub Maternal-Fetal Medicine Prenatal Ultrasound Unit. He was also among the founding members of the Texas Children’s Fetal Center, reflecting his commitment to advancing perinatal care in complex pregnancies.

During his tenure at UTHealth, Dr. Zacharias directed the Prenatal Diagnosis and Testing Center at Lyndon Baines Johnson General Hospital, continuing his dedication to education and earning the Dean’s Teaching Award three years in a row for excellence in training medical students, residents, and fellows. He has been recognized nationally for his teaching, receiving Baylor College of Medicine’s Student-Faculty Teaching Award (2011) and election to America’s Top Obstetricians & Gynecologists (2012).

Dr. Zacharias is also a dedicated researcher and author, contributing to peer-reviewed journals and authoring several chapters, including the “Perinatal Mortality” chapter on UpToDate. He reported the first case of lethal congenital Zika virus syndrome in the U.S. (2016) and co-authored the largest dataset on placenta accreta spectrum in the literature (2014). His work continues to shape clinical best practices in maternal-fetal medicine and improve outcomes for mothers and infants.
