New York City, New York Mar 20, 2019 (Issuewire.com)  - Nurse Practitioner, Primrose Mharapara, provides care in the hemodialysis unit at Toronto General Hospital (TGH), a major teaching hospital in Downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and a part of the University Health Network.

Her story began in central Africa—In Zimbabwe—where she graduated from high school and went on to receive a Bachelor's degree in statistics and geology. Political unrest in her country encouraged her to move to Canada. After obtaining permanent resident status, she became a nurse and then went on to get her Master’s Degree.

She is a graduate of York University in the MScN-PHCNP, as well as, a graduate of the Michener Institute in the Diabetes Educator Certificate Program. She attained a certificate from the University of Toronto collaborative change leadership program. After graduating with a BScN from York University she began her nursing career at North York General in ICU/CCU as a staff nurse and later trained to be a SLED (Sustained Low Efficiency Dialysis) nurse.

Her career path seems almost destined. At one point, when her brother got sick, she returned to Zimbabwe and was so inspired by the attention and care he received by the nursing staff, she soon realized her true calling was to be at the bedside with patients as a Nurse Practitioner. Upon returning to Canada, she accepted a position at Toronto General Hospital in the hemodialysis unit, where she was able to put what she learned as a patient and caregiver into practice daily.

She has held numerous leadership roles which include a member of the patient and family centered care (PFCC) steering committee, a peer to peer teaching model at the bedside, nephrology interprofessional education rounds and a member of the UHN order sets medical directives and delegations committee. She also served as a Membership Liaison for the Canadian Association of Critical Care Nurses (CACCN) during her time at North York general.

Nurse Mharapara is also the recipient of the Patient Choice Award and one of the best Nurses in Canada, nominated by the Canadian Nurses Association.
