Oxford charity secures funding to open up universities to students from non-traditional backgrounds

Today, the Macquarie Group Foundation will confirm a grant of £135,000 to Oxford charity, Universify Education.

Oxford, United Kingdom Jun 14, 2019 (Issuewire.com)  - Universify runs year-long programmes to help improve educational aspirations, school attainment and the application prospects of students to highly selective universities. The programme includes a one-week summer course at Oxford University, monthly coaching sessions and an Easter residential.

The £135,000 grant from the Macquarie Group Foundation will be split over three years, providing the charity with scale-up funding to support the work they do to help promote educational equality.

Harry Hortyn, founder of Universify, said: “We’re delighted to receive this grant, which will enable us to give more students from disadvantaged backgrounds the opportunity to experience university life at Oxford and Cambridge. Opening up our leading institutions to students from non-traditional backgrounds is essential for increasing their aspirations and bringing greater diversity in higher education.”

Rachel Engel, Regional Head of the Macquarie Group Foundation, EMEA said: “At Macquarie we value a diverse workforce and recognize that it’s a catalyst for success. We are delighted to support Universify’s work in promoting education equality for at-risk young people from all backgrounds.”

The grant will be formally announced this evening at an event at Macquarie’s offices.  At the event, staff from Universify will share information about the work they do, the people they work with and their future expansion plans. Students and volunteers from the programme will be in attendance during the evening to answer questions and give first-hand experience of the programme.
