Las Vegas, Nevada May 1, 2020 (Issuewire.com) - The World Series of Poker in Las Vegas is considered the biggest card competition of the year and takes place each summer in Las Vegas. This year it was cancelled and tentatively rescheduled for the Fall due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Because poker players sit closely at a table and constantly pass chips and exchange cards between themselves, it is an inviting environment for COVID- 19, so makes good sense to postpone. Now, more than 100 thousand poker pros must cancel their plans to compete, and many will be looking for a poker fix while they are stuck at home. Enter Amazon Prime's newest poker movie: POKER QUEENS.
POKER QUEENS, an entertaining film about the game’s top female players, is now streaming online at Amazon and Vimeo On Demand.
“In more than 50 years of competition, no woman has ever taken home the top prize at the World Series of Poker Main Event,” says director Sandra Mohr. “I wanted to find out why.”
Many women featured in the film earn millions playing the game and watching them do it is interesting to players and non-players alike. The women in the documentary are strikingly competitive, talented, intuitive, and will go to great lengths to beat their male counterparts. In one memorable scene, female poker personality Sia Layta, author of the book Black Widow Poker, employs what some might call a “Drag King” strategy in an effort to gain a winning edge in the game. Under the care of a popular Hollywood makeup artist, her lipstick is removed and replaced by a full beard and trucker hat to transform into "one of the guys.” The movie shows she immediately tripled her winnings in online tournaments and casino play, and so she decided to enter the WSOP competition like a man. Unfortunately for Sia, when the World Series of Poker found out about her plan, they vowed to disqualify her and keep her $10,000 tournament buy-in if she played in their game dressed as a man.
Overall, Poker Queens honors the bright, talented and gutsy female professionals who live and breathe poker. We see what they were like as kids, how they think, and what makes them winners.
“We were blessed to get the participation of the most skilled women in poker,” producer Christine D. Beatty says. “Jennifer Tilly, Kristen Bicknell, Liv Boeree, Jennifer Harman, Gillian Epp, Loni Harwood, Kathy Liebert, Esther Taylor, Kelly Minken … the list is long.” The film’s cast of poker pros also includes male players Ryan Depaulo, Daniel “Kid Poker” Negreanu, Steve Blay, Joey Ingram, Jeff Boski and mind coach Elliot Roe—all of whom support bringing more women to the poker table.
POKER QUEENS is now available on Amazon Prime and Vimeo on Demand.
