PWR^South Bend Coming December 17–19, 2021

South Bend, IN Hosting First In-Person Gaming Convention

Originally planned for July 2020, PWR^South Bend has survived through the pandemic to bring its first in-person event to the community on December 17 to 19, 2021 at the Century Center. The team shifted its scheduled 2020 event to digital experiences through Twitch and Discord amid the pandemic, where more than 800 people have tuned in over the past year. Aiming to provide unique experiences that are not typically accessible to all, PWR^South Bend brings the digital world to local communities.

When asked why South Bend was chosen as the home for this growing event, Brian Exner, director of PWR^South Bend, explained, "South Bend is a community on the rise, and I think events like this are not only what people are yearning for, but will help South Bend return to its place as a national leader. Our event will help fill the seats of the newly launched Bendix Arena, connecting people who share a passion for video games and entertainment."

This year, the young gaming con at Century Center has announced three returning panelists who will help to share cutting-edge information and entertainment for gamers from around the Midwest:

  • GamerDoc is the author of Handbook of Esports Medicine, has presented at multiple well-known conventions such as PAX East, has produced shows such as Hit the Lab on Twitch which tallied more than 1 million views and has been a consultant working with esports professionals by “applying science and addressing any possible factor that can give [gaming competitors] an advantage,” according to her website.
  • Damon Miles is the owner of local VR studio Next Reality Studios VRcade and Innovation Center. An enthusiast since the 1990s, his interest developed within worlds such as Second Life, Cyberia, and more.
  • Brandon Reed of Cartoon Connect is an artist and growing entrepreneur from South Bend. Approaching 2 million subscribers on YouTube, Reed strives to share stories that connect with audiences that have been underserved in the entertainment world but generate smiles around the world.

COVID-19 dramatically shaped how Pwr^South Bend approached its event in light of public safety. “Having gone through the pandemic, our team was very intentional in waiting until vaccination was headed in the right direction to select a date for our convention,” said Exner. “We are ready to get back together during an exciting time of the year and at a point where we can ensure appropriate measures are taken to keep everyone as safe as possible."

About Pwr^South Bend: Pwr^South Bend is the latest event to utilize South Bend’s existing facilities in innovative ways. Its activities committee anticipates bringing guests to engage with the Bendix Arena and LAN Center from across the country while adhering to the best public health guidance at the time of the event.
