Rubin Chair and Division Head of Gastroenterology at the University of Washington, she oversees a team of researchers and clinicians who are dedicated to studying and treating liver diseases, particularly non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and alcoholic liver disease (ALD).

Her research is focused on understanding the mechanisms of insulin resistance in these liver diseases, using both in vivo and cellular approaches. Her work has shed light on the underlying biological processes that contribute to the development and progression of NAFLD and ALD, which has important implications for the diagnosis and treatment of these conditions.

Throughout her academic career, Dr. Carr received her medical degree at Cornell University Medical College and went on to complete an internship and residency in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. She then pursued a fellowship in gastroenterology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania before completing a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania.

A Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP), the doctor is board-certified in gastroenterology and internal Medicine (previously) by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

In addition to her research, she is an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Gastroenterological Association, the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, and the European Association for the Study of the Liver. She is also a founding member of the Association of Black Gastroenterologists and Hepatologists and serves on the national board of the American Liver Foundation.

Recognized for her expertise and leadership by her peers and the broader scientific community, Dr. Carr has served as a guest editor for Cellular and Molecular Gastroenterology and Hepatology and is currently an editorial member of several leading journals in the field, including Hepatology, Liver Transplantation, and the Journal of Lipid Research. She was also honored as one of Cell's most inspiring Black scientists in 2020.
