For Serag Baddar, Limerence is more than a new song. It is the completion of an ideal that began when he was just 15 or 16 years old and wasn’t yet capable of turning it into songs he imagined.
Now, at 30, Baddar has finally brought that early guitar riff to life.
A music composer based in Malta, Baddar approaches songwriting from an unusual perspective. He describes himself as a philosopher who also happens to be a musician, creating primarily as a hobby while embracing the ideal of “writing for dopamine" making music because the process itself is rewarding.
That philosophy is at the heart of Limerence.
The track began with a guitar riff Baddar wrote during his teenage years. At the time, he felt his song writing and guitar playing abilities weren’t developed enough to do the ideal justice, so he put it aside with the promise that he would eventually return to it and create something worthy of the original idea.
Years later, he did exactly that.
Originally titled Lotus, the song also carries a subtle connection to Buckethead’s Padmasana, whose rhythm guitar riff influenced one of the song’s section.The name Lotus itself came from the meaning “Padmasana” the lotus pose. As the project evolved, however, the song eventually became Limerence.
Musically, Baddar’s work sits within a distinctive form of post-rock, shaped by his long-standing appreciation for heavier music. Influences such as Opeth and Tool can be felt in his approach, particularly in the contrast between heaviness and cleaner, more atmospheric passages.
Rather than treating clean sections as brief breaks, using them to expand the scope and depth of rock or metal compositions, Baddar explores what happens when that clean, melodic character becomes the foundation of an entire song.
One of the elements he is most proud of on Limerence is the relationship between its instruments. Rather than simply having every instrument follow the same music idea, Baddar intentionally gives each one its own role.

The result is a track design for listeners who appreciate catchy, addictive rock music while still wanting something that feels different from the usual formula.
For Baddar, originality doesn’t mean making music inaccessible. His philosophy is that music can remain approachable without sacrificing individuality, a belief that continues to shape his development from his earlier groove metal ideals into the post-rock direction he explores today.
Limerence is ultimately a reminder that some musical ideals simply need time.
What began as an unfinished teenage riff eventually became a completed composition more than a decade later. Rather than abandoning the ideals, Baddar allowed himself the time to grow into the musician capable of finishing it.
And perhaps that is the most fitting expression of his approach to music: Make something because you genuinely want to hear it.
