New Delhi, Delhi Jan 18, 2022 (Issuewire.com) - You’ve been documenting daily life for almost 10 years, what are the biggest changes you’ve seen in your photography journey?
When I started photography at age of 9, there were lots of things in street life that I realised, especially in the context of Indian street photography. It was a painful moment happing in front of my eyes like child labour and child marriage and child taking drugs, In fact, I have faced people harassment in my street life. During my study periods, I have taken some of the responsibility for guiding those children who took drugs and now I am working with SPYM on Drug Abuse Prevention Children also, I started a platform, Sheru Photography Facebook community, a forum for photographers. Everything I learned about photography, I’ve learned on the field. Earlier, only three photographers were allowed on the field, whether it was in Street, or in sanctuaries. Now, in the same places, I see at least 9-10 amateur photographers, with their cameras.
What elements are absolutely essential for Street photography?
The idea comes first whatever you see around you, photography comes second. The most important is to know your passion, where they will be habituating, when is the best time to go, and how they will behave. You should study the fields and subject’s behavior before you shoot, and maybe, first observe. You don’t have any control over human and natural behavior. You have to anticipate the action and before the action happens, you press the shutter. That’s subject field knowledge. But mainly, you have to understand and study the habitat, knowing the nature of the bird or animal you’re photographing. There are ethics involved, like when they’re nesting, or feeding, you don’t click them, and you don’t disturb them.
How do you think with the advancement of equipment, etc., has photography especially, for street photography, been simplified?
I think nowadays it is easier to get equipment because nowadays, you can rent very equipment according to your requirements too. One more thing is that you have a smartphone there are lots of advanced options for photography. You should utilize your photography techniques, such as framing rules of thirds and exposure bar, etc. Earlier, it would become too expensive to buy the equipment. Having said that, the younger crop of photographers also makes it about photography, and not about nature.
What are the challenges during street photography in today’s times?
According to me, the challenge to ensure privacy and ask for consent before being photographed is on the rise for them. Sera, a budding photographer, and cinematographer say the core of street photography is to convey the story behind the image but not at the cost of invading the subject’s privacy. It is the art of displaying emotion and narrating the story behind it. However, the picture only becomes authentic for publication when permission to be photographed is sought and granted.
How has technology changed Photography life?
As everyone knows, the smartphone cameras and digital cameras became more advanced they were able to produce high-quality photographers also, providing raw picture files. Smartphone photography enables the individual to assess the quality of the pictures immediately after it’s been taken and allows for easier photo editing as well, ensuring that a perfect picture is produced every time and everywhere.
The images captured with smartphones could also be easily uploaded and shared across the social media platform—a feature that many businesses around the world have capitalized on.
He still has a long way to go. I will be eager to pick up more of his breakthrough photography stories in the future.
