Excerpts from the video and other stuff that is important for you to know:
What is so unique about South Korean healthcare?
As Nas puts it in his video, “all their hospitals are mandated by law to be non-profit”. Simple idea? Maybe. Powerful impact? Definitely! How? Non-profit hospitals mean all the profit they make goes right back into healthcare investments – into research, buying the latest equipment, expanding their infrastructure Think about it – no endless medical appointments, no profit-motivated diagnosis, prescriptions or recommendations. In short, it’s a circle of selfless medical goodness that puts “people before profit” as Nas explains in his video.
Isn’t South Korea famous for plastic surgeries mostly?
True, they have one of the biggest plastic surgery industries in the world (and some very cool skincare products too!), not to mention their state-of-the-art dental procedures. But that’s not all. There is much more to Korean healthcare.
Did the video say the highest survival rates for some serious illnesses?
Yes, for some illnesses they have the highest post-surgery survival rates in the world - breast cancer (92%), thyroid cancer (over 99%), stomach cancer (74%), cervical cancer (over 79%), colorectal cancer (over 76 %), kidney transplants (96%), pancreatic transplants (95%) and the list goes on.
World-class technology
In the words of Nas Daily “, they have technology that treats illnesses like cancer by only shooting lasers at the cancerous cells, without harming healthy cells” – this makes a world of a difference during post-operative recovery as patients don’t lose precious healthy cells and are able to recover much quicker.
Are the costs higher for foreigners?
No! The Koreans believe in sharing their world-class inventions and innovations with the whole world. That’s why you have people from over 190 countries that have visited South Korea for healthcare treatments (that’s almost every single country in the world). Surgical procedures in Korea are of world-class quality, and as an example surgeries could cost 30% to 50% lesser compared to the USA, depending on each individual case.
How do they do all of this?
We spoke to the Director General at the Korea Health Industry Development Institute Abu Dhabi office, Mr. Sung Eun Hwang and here’s how he explained it – “In Korea, we put a lot of effort into our research – not only to find new technologies and methodologies, but also to constantly improve our processes.”
Especially during pre-surgery processes for critical illnesses, each passing day could make the difference between life and death.
“We have very tight procedures that move things along very quickly due to our investments in artificial intelligence and information technology.” He continued. “So, it is possible that in Korea your surgery may start within a week’s time from diagnosis – even if you live half the world away. This is something that may take months in other parts of the world”
Does my insurance cover costs if I get treated in Korea?
As Jeffrey McNamee, a Nas Daily fan, pointed out in a comment on the Nas Daily video, “many US insurance companies may pay for the air travel and other expenses to get treated in Asia, as they end up saving money themselves”. This may be true for insurers in other parts of the world too. Best to check with your insurance company.
Is it safe?
South Korea is known to be one of the safest countries and it has strict healthcare laws designed to protect foreigners. The Koreans are a warm-hearted bunch of people, very respectful and hospitable.
