Surge in High-Volume Internet Users Shifts Focus to Better Broadband Performance

Jersey City, New Jersey Dec 21, 2025 (Issuewire.com)  - The number of broadband users consuming 1 terabyte (TB) or more of data per month has tripled over the past five years, highlighting a major shift in internet usage trends. As demand for high-speed internet grows, the broadband industry is focusing on enhancing network performance and improving Quality of Experience (QoE) for all users. These findings come from the latest OpenVault Broadband Insights (OVBI) report, released today by OpenVault, a leading provider of SaaS-based solutions for broadband optimization.

Key Trends in Broadband Usage

According to the report, nearly one in four internet users (24.3%) are now classified as "Power Users," meaning they consume at least 1 TB of data per month. This marks a 232% increase compared to 2019, when only 7.3% of users fell into this category.

Additional findings at the end of 2024 include:

  • Record-breaking data consumption: The average household used 698.2 GB per month, nearing the 700 GB milestone.
  • Upstream growth outpacing downstream growth: Users are sending more data than ever before, with 14.6% growth in uploads compared to 8.6% growth in downloads.
  • Extreme data users pushing limits: Some subscribers consumed 53 times more downstream data and 123 times more upstream data than the average user.

Christmas Day Highlights Internet Trends

The report also analyzed broadband usage on Christmas Day, a time when families use the internet for video calls, holiday movie streaming, online gaming, and setting up new connected devices. Findings include:

  • Sustained high usage throughout the day (9 a.m. – 10 p.m.), marking a 24% increase from Christmas 2022 and a 58% increase from 2020.
  • Record-breaking individual usage: The highest downstream consumer used 34 TB in Q4 2024, which is 53 times the average usage per subscriber. The top upstream user uploaded 5.5 TB, which is 123 times the average.

Industry Response: Enhancing Network Performance

To meet the growing demand for high-speed and reliable internet, broadband companies are deploying new solutions to optimize network performance. The latest OV Advanced PMA™ technology, highlighted in the OVBI report, improved throughput by 27%, increasing speeds from 201 Mbps to 255 Mbps. This enhancement provides sufficient bandwidth to support 10 to 15 Netflix HD streams simultaneously.
