The Barcelona Festival of Song: 19 years committed to Diversity and inclusion in music

In 2023 we are celebrating indigenous Latin American languages, works by women composers, and Brazilian art songs.

Barcelona, Spain Jun 13, 2023 (Issuewire.com)  - Celebrating its 19th anniversary, the Barcelona Festival of Song is a vocal summer program for classical singers, collaborative pianists, and musicologists studying the history and interpretation of Latin American and Iberian art songs in Spanish, Portuguese, and Catalan.

As a fully immersive experience, the Barcelona Festival of Song provides invaluable exposure and experience to classical singers to work with professional musicians who have extensive relations with Latin American and Iberian vocal repertoires in master classes, advanced lectures, and diction sessions.

Patricia Caicedo, a critically-acclaimed artist-scholar of Iberian and Latin American art songs, heads the Barcelona Festival of Song. In addition to serving as the founder of the Festival, she has recorded numerous CDs, published multiple books, and often presents guest lectures, master classes, and concerts at universities across the United States. Today, she is devoted to fostering diversity and inclusion in music and preserving and promoting underrepresented repertoires.

June 28th's inaugural recital El alma en un beso will be performed by Patricia herself, accompanied by Nikos Stavlas, a professor and residential artist at the Festival. The performance will highlight works composed by Latin American and Iberian women.

The next concert, on June 30th, continues the Festival's commitment to disseminating underrepresented repertoires by showcasing indigenous Latin American languages, a rarity in today's art song world. The performers will be Carolina Plata, and Luis Gabriel Mesa, both professors at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Colombia.

On July 1st, the Festival shows its commitment to Brazilian art songs and composers, who have honored it with the Brasil Ibermusicas Award in 2022 with the program Cordão de prata, a recital of Brazilian art songs of the XIX and XX centuries interpreted by baritone Flávio Mello, a musician from Fundação Teatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, and pianist Robert Rocco, a professor of the North Carolina School of the Arts. Brazilian art songs are celebrated again on July 3rd with Canções de Amor e Morte, a recital by Alberto Pacheco and Anderson Beltrão.

This year, the Festival pays tribute to Jordi Sabatés, a composer and pianist, with the recital Genealogia that includes Sabatés's works and works by composers who influenced him. Greek pianist Nikos Stavlas will interpret the program on July 5th.

The Barcelona Festival of Song is possible thanks to the support of the Biblioteca de Catalunya and the CSIC Residencia d'Investigadors.
