The Hong Kong Lawmaker Johnny Ng is the One Who is Trying to Bring Coinbase to Town

Hong Kong, which was once a crypto hive before the retail investment was banned. Now Hong Kong lawmaker Johnny Ng is trying to bring it back.

New York City, New York Jul 31, 2023 (Issuewire.com)  - A few days earlier, Coinbase Global, Inc., a publicly traded company of cryptocurrency was sued by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), so it was looking for its new home. That problem seemed to be solved as the company got a brand new invitation from Johnny Ng, the Hong Kong lawmaker in a recent viral tweet. A member of the city’s Legislative Council (LegCo), Johnny tweeted a viral invitation a month ago for crypto exchanges globally, specifically Coinbase to apply for a license in Hong Kong. His tweet said, “I hereby offer an invitation to welcome all global virtual asset trading operators including @coinbase to come to HK for application of official trading platforms and further development plans. Please feel free to approach me and I am happy to provide any assistance.”

Johnny Ng was elected to LegCo last year and since then he has become an active voice that vouches for the legislature's crypto attempts. He has also lobbied John Lee, the Hong Kong chief executive to show his support for the digital assets in a conspicuous and evident way. This year, Lee also gave a speech at the inauguration of the Institute of Web 3.0 in Hong Kong, making it a big deal for the city's former status as a Crypto center. Johnny Ng's efforts are coming at a time when the U.S Government is driving various digital asset firms offshore by not being very welcoming or hospitable. This creates an excellent opportunity for the cities like Hong Kong where the future of digital assets can bloom and part of the driving force behind it is Johnny Ng's efforts and strategies. About his efforts and the city's rise to claim its former status, on Hong Kong's Web3 push, he said, "I wouldn't say it's just me, but I am a part of it."

In a recent interview, Johnny Ng said he first heard about Bitcoin around 2011 while working on facial recognition technology. But he did not start mining right away and he was not convinced enough. It was six years later when BTC was trading at a couple thousand dollars he became interested.
